Princess Robinson – Social Media Exec

At school I always had interests in creative subjects like art and drama but I also loved the sciences and was naturally quite good at them from a young age. This meant my natural route ended up being a science based one and I went on to study Biomedical Science at University. The more into science I got the more I realised I didn’t massively enjoy it and I was constantly trying to find ways of fulfilling the creative void I had. This resulted in me blogging, vlogging, and starting a podcast with my friend. It was then that I realised I definitely wanted to explore a more creative career path and I applied for the job as a social content graduate at Gymshark.

As you can tell from the above I most definitely did not always know what I wanted to do. I fought with it for a long time and felt I had to take a very academic route as that was the ‘right thing to do’, rather than exploring a career in things that I genuinely enjoyed.

In terms of getting into the business, as I said before I applied for a graduate social role. I was worried that I wouldn’t get it because I didn’t have a degree in a relevant subject and so I did lots of research into brands and their socials to give my application the best chance possible. I think this knowledge of competitor brands and their social plans combined with the social bits I had done in my spare time definitely helped me get the role. I also think I had a lot of transferable skills from my degree such as data anlysis that really comes in handy when we are pulling insights and data from our social channels.

Now I have a permanent position in the social team as a Social Content Executive. I am really happy in my role and I feel I still have so much to learn about socials. I see my future staying in marketing and would love to broaden beyond social into more IRL marketing and events in the future. I love the idea of knowing bits of all of the parts which make up the wider marketing funnel rather than niching down into one area.

Sammie Jones – Head of Studio Ops

My favourite subjects at school were PE and Media Studies, I always loved being active and watching films! I went on to study Creative Technologies (basically an early version of what’s now called AI – Photoshop, videography, photography, etc). After graduating I fell into being a letting agent, which was my part-time job since 16, with no real plan for my degree. A recruiter convinced me my customer service skills combined with my media background were perfect for Account Management at a creative agency – I had no idea what that meant but said yes anyway, and it was SO MUCH FUN! Long hours, great clients, made friends and I got to feel creative without being the creative person. I worked my way up, stayed connected with people along the way, and one of those connections eventually led me to Gymshark – a 20-minute interview (with preparation on researching the brand and prepping examples of my previous achievements in work) and I got the job, again without really knowing what it was other than “organizing the creatives”! That was 8 years ago and since then I’ve gone from Campaign Executive to Head of Brand Operations. We are there behind the scenes making sure everything flows smoothly from team to team, so anything you see digitally from Gymshark has gone through my team. I’ve somehow landed the perfect role that combines my love of organisation, creative media, and sports and fitness…and when you love what you do, it never really feels like work!

Christian Mason – Brand Transformation Lead

At school I wanted to be a police officer, went to college and did public services, volunteered as a special constable for 5 years whilst working at Sainsbury’s. I started my career working in customer services at a Bank, moved to a Quality Assurance role, then into process improvement. Then became an IT change manager. During COVID I wanted to try something new so applied and was successful at getting a role at Gymshark as process improvement exec. I then moved into a Process Improvement Manager role and managed a team of 2 across process, systems and reporting.I moved to the NEC for 6 months as PMO lead before coming back to Gymshark as Brand Transformation Lead, leading the technology and RWF transformations. I still say I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but what I have found is that I have pushed to get into roles that I have enjoyed or been good at, so moving from QA to process improvement, I wanted to make change and help people with their issues, so naturally moved in that direction. My now wife found me the role at Gymshark, as I needed a change, we have lived in and around Birmingham my whole life so knew of the brand well. We are about to do a huge technology transformation across our creative studio, GTM teams and marketing department. HUGE change for the business with loads of benefits, I am excited to deliver these changes as I believe it will have a positive impact on the business. Currently, I can’t see myself doing anything different than change/transformation, it is a role where you can see the impact of your efforts and help driving meaningful change to business and its people.

Ellie Cooper – Sustainability Graduate

At school, I was particularly interested in human rights, especially women’s rights, and began to see how climate change can worsen inequalities across gender, race, and location. I studied Philosophy, History and Economics at A-level, which helped me understand people, systems and decision-making. I went on to study International Relations at Cardiff University, where environmental politics tied these interests together. I realised my main focus was sustainability – finding practical ways to improve lives. I became especially interested in fashion’s environmental and social impact, exploring topics like microfibres in WHO policy, women’s rights in supply chains, and climate-related security risks. To specialise further, I completed a Master’s in Leadership for Sustainable Development at Queen’s University Belfast, choosing it for its practical placement opportunities. I undertook internships with WRAP (a sustainability NGO), Derry City Council’s Sustainability Marketing Department, and a resale start-up: Tern Circular. These experiences showed me I was most motivated by the pace and impact of the business sector.I didn’t always know the exact role, but I always wanted to have a positive impact. Over time, my focus narrowed to incorporate my interests of human rights and politics into sustainability, and then to sustainable fashion and circularity. I found my role at Gymshark on LinkedIn and prepared thoroughly by researching their sustainability work and identifying gaps. I linked my experience such as researching water saving cotton alternatives at WRAP to Gymsharks’s expanding cotton product range and suggested improvements as well as end of life solutions including resale opportunities. My internships, leadership / volunteer experience as co-president of a refugee support charity, and a sustainability-focused Instagram account helped me stand out by showing both expertise and initiative. My videos highlighting my slow fashion gym fits which usually included second-hand Gymshark items was particularly unique and hard to ignore. I’m currently a Sustainability Graduate at Gymshark (just under two years), leading the circularity pillar. My work focuses on improving product lifecycles – from reducing supply chain waste to exploring resale and end-of-life solutions. I enjoy the practical, impact-driven nature of the role. Going forward, I’d like to progress into roles like Circularity Manager or exploring recommerce positions as the secondhand market is outperforming apparel.

Sian Keane – Chief People Officer

I’m the Chief People Officer at Gymshark, which means I look after our people strategy across our head offices in the UK and US, as well as our retail teams. I’m part of the Executive team and spend my time shaping our culture, values, hiring, career development and how it really feels to work at Gymshark day to day.

My career journey has been very squiggly. My first ever job was at McDonald’s, and after university I worked in social services in Australia, supporting children with intellectual disabilities. When I moved to the UK, I had to start again and found my way into recruitment, assessments and later fast-growing start-ups. I’ve worked across different roles and industries, learning as I went.

I was headhunted for the role at Gymshark from a recruiter. I initially took the call because I was at a turning point in my career after 11 years at Farfetch and I wanted to try something different. The opportunity to work at a slightly earlier stage business that was growing had me interested, and I like working in Founder-led environments. My skill-set and what I enjoy are complex businesses and Gymshark piqued my interest as it is a UK based international business that is multi-channel.

After meeting Ben and the Executive team, as well as members of the People Team and EAs I met along the way, I knew it was something that aligned with my values as well, which is very important in my role.

I never had a clear plan – I followed my instincts and paid attention to what I enjoyed, where I was learning and when work didn’t feel like work. I’ve had to work hard to learn most of what I know, and that’s built my confidence over time.

My advice to our finalists today? Don’t assume others are smarter than you. Your perspective is unique – use it as your strength, speak up, and trust that growth comes from trying things, not having everything figured out.

Emma Fretwell – Strategy Manager

My career path wasn’t something I mapped out from an early age. After studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at university, I began my career in strategy consulting, where I completed an internship before joining as a graduate, where I worked across a range of industries and business challenges.

Through consulting, I discovered a particular interest in retail and consumer brands. Combined with my passion for running and fitness, this led me to pursue opportunities within the activewear industry. Before joining Gymshark, I spent time understanding both the company and the wider market through research, podcasts and visits to the Regent Street store, helping me assess whether it was the right fit for me and vice versa.

I’ve been part of Gymshark’s Strategy team since 2024, helping to shape strategic decisions that support the company’s continued growth. I enjoy contributing to a fast-growing business while working alongside talented people in a genuinely positive culture. I love what I do today and, while I don’t have a fixed plan for exactly where my career will take me, I’ve found that following my interests and staying open to opportunities has served me well so far.

The Inspirational Learning Group is proud to work in partnership with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to deliver the FCA ScamSmart Challenge, an employer-led education programme that combines financial education with careers and employability skills.

The challenge engaged 920 students from ten schools and colleges across Leeds and London, giving them the opportunity to tackle a real-world issue through an immersive business challenge. Working in teams, students responded to a live employer brief, researching financial scams before developing and presenting innovative campaigns and solutions to a panel of industry judges at the Regional Finals, hosted at the FCA Headquarters.

The programme was designed to do much more than increase awareness of financial scams. Through employer engagement and project-based learning, students developed the essential skills employers are looking for, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, resilience and presentation skills.

Alongside these transferable skills, students gained a greater understanding of careers within the financial sector, apprenticeship opportunities and the pathways available to them after education. By connecting classroom learning with real industry challenges, the programme helped students build confidence, raise aspirations and understand how their skills can be applied in the workplace.

The success of the FCA ScamSmart Challenge has led to The Inspirational Learning Group and the Financial Conduct Authority extending their partnership for a further year. Together, we will continue to provide more schools and colleges with meaningful employer encounters that inspire young people, develop future talent and prepare students for the world of work.

The GE Vernova Foundation has announced Engineers of Change, a bold new initiative designed to inspire the next generation of engineers, innovators and energy leaders through early exposure to engineering, hands-on learning and direct connections with industry professionals.

Backed by a $4.5 million investment and delivered in partnership with FHI 360, the initiative will engage more than 6,000 students across Staffordshire, UK, and Greenville, South Carolina, over the next three years, helping build stronger pathways into engineering education, training and careers.

In Staffordshire, The Inspirational Learning Group (TILG) will lead programme delivery, building on a long-standing partnership with the GE Vernova Foundation that has already inspired thousands of young people through employer-led engineering outreach and careers education over the past five years.

Designed to make engineering accessible, relevant and engaging, Engineers of Change brings engineering to life through hands-on experiences, practical learning and meaningful connections with industry professionals. The initiative is made up of two complementary programmes designed to inspire students at different stages of their education.

Engineering Spark engages students aged 13–14 in discovering engineering through dynamic, hands-on learning sessions led by GE Vernova engineers and volunteers, helping spark curiosity and expand understanding of what engineering is all about.

Engineering Catalyst is an immersive two-year programme for students aged 15–18, featuring real-world design challenges, college and career readiness workshops, and engagement with GE Vernova engineers. The programme is designed to equip students with the skills and confidence to think like engineers, build a strong engineering identity and pursue post-secondary education, apprenticeships and careers within the engineering sector.

Students who successfully complete Engineering Catalyst will also receive a partial scholarship towards future engineering education and training.

Kristin Carvell, President of the GE Vernova Foundation and Chief Communications Officer at GE Vernova, said:

“Meeting the world’s growing energy needs will require not only breakthrough technology, but people – bold thinkers, problem-solvers and next generation leaders ready to shape the future. Through Engineers of Change, we are helping young people see engineering not just as a career path, but as a mission with real-world impact. By bringing engineering to life in engaging, community-connected ways, we hope to ignite curiosity today and help build the workforce of tomorrow.”

Engineers of Change reflects the GE Vernova Foundation’s commitment to strengthening the future energy workforce by inspiring more young people to pursue engineering, particularly in communities where GE Vernova operates. With more than 130 years of history in the UK, GE Vernova continues to invest in Staffordshire, helping reinforce the region’s position as a leading hub for electrification technologies.

Through its delivery of Engineers of Change, TILG will continue working with schools, employers and industry partners to provide meaningful employer encounters and hands-on learning experiences that help young people develop the skills, confidence and aspirations needed to succeed in the future world of engineering.

From 6–10 July, The Inspirational Learning Group (TILG), in partnership with NatWest, will deliver NatWest Thrive Work Experience Week – an ambitious programme of modern work experience designed to give thousands of young people meaningful employer encounters, workplace insight and the opportunity to develop the skills they need for the future.

As schools continue to look for flexible, high-quality work experience that is accessible to all students, NatWest Thrive Work Experience Week brings together face-to-face experiences, employer volunteering and virtual careers content to create a blended approach to modern work experience.

Throughout the week, students from schools across the UK will attend one of five NatWest Accelerator Hubs in Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, London and Manchester, where they will work alongside NatWest employees and volunteers to complete a live business challenge. These hands-on experiences give students the opportunity to develop key employability skills, solve real-world problems and hear directly from colleagues working across a wide range of roles within NatWest, helping them gain a broader understanding of the many career opportunities available.

Alongside the Accelerator Hubs, NatWest colleagues will also be volunteering their time in schools across the country, delivering employer encounters that allow students to hear about different career journeys, ask questions, explore workplace skills and gain valuable insight into the world of work through real interactions with employees.

To ensure every school can benefit, TILG and NatWest Thrive are also providing free access to a comprehensive programme of careers and employability content through Lightbulb Online.

Schools taking part in NatWest Thrive Work Experience Week will have access to:

Employer encounters with NatWest colleagues

Careers assemblies

Enterprise and employability challenges

On-demand webinars and interviews

The National Careers Challenge

A two-hour NatWest Accelerator Hub Challenge that can be delivered in school

Flexible content that can be delivered as individual lessons or combined to create a full day of careers learning

The programme has been designed to give more schools access to high-quality careers education that is flexible, engaging and relevant. By combining face-to-face experiences with virtual learning, schools can provide students with a varied programme of employer encounters and workplace experiences that develop confidence, build employability skills and help young people make informed decisions about their futures.

NatWest Thrive Work Experience Week also supports schools in delivering modern work experience in line with the equalex framework, developed by The Careers & Enterprise Company. Through meaningful employer encounters, workplace experiences and careers learning, the programme helps schools provide opportunities that reflect the future direction of careers education while ensuring every young person has access to inspiring experiences, regardless of their location or circumstances.

Schools can still get involved. While NatWest Thrive Work Experience Week takes place from 6–10 July, all of the resources will remain available on Lightbulb Online for the rest of the academic year, giving schools the flexibility to deliver the content whenever it best fits their careers curriculum.

This year The Inspirational Learning Group has been working closely with Three Spires Trust to support the implementation of the equalex framework for modern work experience.

The equalex framework, developed by The Careers and Enterprise Company, provides a solution for the Government’s new guarantee of two weeks’ worth of work experience for every young person: one week’s provision in KS3 and one week’s provision in KS4. This includes multiple opportunities and touch points to ensure they fully understand future career opportunities, progression routes and the key skills employers look for.

The equalex framework was piloted in 2024/25 across 5 multi-academy trusts, including Three Spires Trust. These trusts were asked to use their existing curriculum models to test how equalex could be delivered.

Three Spires worked closely with The Inspirational Learning Group to map their innovative ‘Next Gen’ curriculum to the National Careers Challenge and online learning content available on LightbulbOnline. This identified opportunities for cross-curricular careers learning and employer-led challenge days that could be delivered within a school setting to entire year groups.

Over the past 12 months, The Inspirational Learning Group has delivered numerous employer and workplace-encounters with Three Spires Trust, connecting the school with local and national employers, business owners and apprentices who have shared their own career journeys to inspire students, challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations

With the support of our expert facilitators, these employers worked with students on a broad spectrum of employer-posed tasks and challenges, from investing £10,000 in imaginary stocks and shares to identifying the cause of a cryptosporidium outbreak!

Feedback gathered from more than 450 year 8 students who participated in our Local Labour Market Taster Days highlighted the impact of these activities.

88% of students agreed that the workshops helped them identify links between their school subjects and future career opportunities.

95% of students agreed that the workshops gave them a greater awareness of employers and careers opportunities in their local area and the different routes into these careers.

92% of students agreed that by completing these workshops, they were now able to demonstrate a range of skills linked to different career paths.

Stoke City Academy approached The Inspirational Learning Group to explore how we could best prepare their players for the world of work should they not progress into full-time professional football. Our aim was to help them recognise their transferable skills and understand how those strengths can be applied across a range of sectors and roles.

At The Inspirational Learning Group, we worked with academy players to help them recognise the skills they already use every day, and how these apply beyond the pitch. The focus was on bridging the gap between sport and the workplace, making those connections clear, practical and relevant.

The Inspirational Learning Group team delivered a series of interactive workshops centred around engineering and key employability skills including communication, teamwork, leadership, problem solving, creativity, resilience and presentation.

The day was designed to be hands-on and engaging. Players took part in a series of engineering-based challenges that tested their critical thinking and ability to work under pressure.

• Building the tallest possible structure using only paper and card, designed to hold a ping pong ball
• Creating a stable solution to balance the ball using limited materials
• Designing and building a working floodlight system using electrical circuits

Each activity required players to collaborate, think strategically and adapt quickly, mirroring both match-day environments and real workplace scenarios.

The sessions delivered by The Inspirational Learning Group not only developed these skills further, but helped players understand how they transfer into industries such as engineering, construction, technology and beyond.

Impact

Players demonstrated strong engagement throughout, showing clear progression in how they approached challenges, communicated as a team and reflected on their performance.

Importantly, they left with a better understanding of their own strengths and how these can be applied both within football and in future careers outside of the sport.

Player Feedback

“Today showed us that the skills we use in football, like communication and teamwork, can be used in other jobs as well. The challenges made us think differently and work together properly.”

“We didn’t realise how much problem solving and thinking goes into things like engineering. It was good to see how it links to what we already do every day.”

Looking to do something similar?

If you’re looking to develop the skills of your young people and better prepare them for the world of work, get in touch with The Inspirational Learning Group (TILG). We deliver bespoke workshops tailored to your setting, designed to bring out the very best in every student.

The biggest event of the academic year is back, and this year it’s taking place in Telford.

On 2nd July 2026, The National Careers Challenge Grand Final will be held at the Telford International Centre, bringing together around 1,000 students from schools across the UK.

Delivered by The Inspirational Learning Group, the Grand Final marks the end of months of in-school challenges, where students have worked on real employer-led briefs, developing ideas, building confidence, and strengthening key skills.

This year’s Final is delivered in partnership with NatWest Thrive as the main partner, alongside Air Products, British Airways, NatWest (Year 9) and Gymshark (Year 10). Each sponsor sets a live brief, giving students the opportunity to engage with real industries and expectations.

On the day, students will present their ideas in a live setting. No slides. Just their thinking, teamwork, and ability to communicate clearly under pressure.

New for 2026 is the equalex Zone.

This will give students the chance to take part in one-to-one interactions with employers through short, practical activities. Designed to go beyond traditional careers events, it gives students something to complete, reflect on, and take away.

With a full day of activity, the focus is on the skills employers look for in young people. Communication, problem solving, teamwork, and confidence.

We’re looking forward to bringing the Grand Finals BACK to Telford and sharing more with you in the lead up.

When Connor first came into Longton Job Centre in January 2025, he was unsure about what came next. He’d spent years feeling on the outside of things. School had been tough, especially with the bullying he faced around his autism and weight, and it had chipped away at his confidence. By the time he joined the YES Project, he felt he’d run out of direction.

What followed over the next year was a steady, genuine shift, the kind that happens when a young person is given time, encouragement and the chance to try things they never thought they could do.

Step by step, Connor rebuilt his confidence
Working closely with his work coach, Connor started taking on small opportunities and gradually built up to bigger challenges. With every session he completed, he grew a little more sure of himself.

Across the year, he completed training in employability, CV writing, digital and life skills, Stoke by Numbers, Level 3 First Aid and an introduction to sports coaching. He also achieved advanced safeguarding through the FA.

For someone who once couldn’t picture getting through a Level 3 course, these achievements meant more than certificates, they were proof he could move forward.

A turning point in sport
Connor’s work experience through the Future Pledge placed him with Port Vale FC, and it was exactly where he needed to be. His calm, steady way of working stood out straight away. Coaches described him as committed, reliable and someone who brought a positive atmosphere to sessions.

For Connor, this experience opened up a path he had never considered seriously before: supporting other young people, especially those who are autistic, through coaching and sport.

A new chapter
Connor is now working full-time with GXO and continuing his FA Sports Coaching qualification. He has routine, purpose and growing confidence in where he’s heading. His long-term aim is to become a coach who can help neurodiverse young people feel understood and capable, something he once doubted he would ever feel confident enough to do.

His journey hasn’t been quick or easy, but it has been real. And it shows exactly what can happen when a young person is given the right support at the right time.

About the YES Project
YES supports 16 to 24 year-olds in Stoke-on-Trent who are not in education, employment or training. The programme is delivered by YMCA North Staffordshire, TILG, Stoke City Community Trust, Landau and Youth Offending Services.

Across the programme this year:
• 500 young people enrolled
• 176 received support with mental health
• 215 completed life skills training
• 196 completed CV writing
• 222 took part in job search
• 275 completed employability training
• 66 sustained employment at 1 month
• 31 sustained employment at 6 months

TILG’s part in Connor’s journey
As a delivery partner, TILG works with young people to build confidence, develop practical skills and recognise their strengths. Our sessions give young people space to try things in a supportive environment and see new possibilities for themselves.

Connor’s story is just one example of what happens when a young person is encouraged, supported and given time to grow.

Partner With Us
If you’re looking for an education partner who can genuinely engage young people, build their confidence and help them take the next step in work, training or further education, we’d be happy to talk.
TILG works with schools, local authorities and community programmes to provide practical, meaningful support that makes a difference to young people’s lives.

Students from Blythe Bridge High School in Stoke-on-Trent have turned a national competition win into a project that’s now helping schools across the country.

After winning the Oli Leigh Challenge at The National Careers Challenge Finals 2025, the team officially launched Mindful Mondays on 10th October, to mark World Mental Health Day.

The launch was attended by Councillor Adam Parks of Staffordshire Moorlands council, Michelle Leigh (founder of the Oli Leigh Trust), representatives from The Inspirational Learning Group (TILG), and the students’ proud parents and teachers.

Mindful Mondays encourages pupils to take time each week to reflect on how they’re feeling, take part in short mindfulness activities, and talk openly about mental health.

The idea began as part of the Oli Leigh Challenge, delivered by TILG with the Oli Leigh Trust, which asked students nationwide to design resources that could support wellbeing in schools or local communities.

With help from Rebecca Clarke, Head of Education and Curriculum at TILG, the concept has developed into a digital resource now available FREE to all UK schools through TILG’s Lightbulb Online platform. Resources include teacher guides, posters, presentations, and staff training, supporting schools to meet the Department for Education’s new RSHE guidance, which now requires suicide prevention and mental health education to be embedded within the curriculum.

Speaking at the launch, Michelle Leigh, founder of The Oli Leigh Trust, praised the team for turning tragedy into action:

“Oli’s legacy is about saving lives through early education and conversation. Seeing these students take that message forward in such a meaningful way is incredibly special.”

Councillor Adam Parks added:

“This is an inspiring example of what happens when young people are empowered to lead the way on important issues. Blythe Bridge should be extremely proud.”

The Mindful Mondays app is currently in development, with plans for release in 2026, giving students the chance to access activities independently. Schools can access all resources for free here:
https://form.jotform.com/242493051403347
